Then, as now, Audi is one of the most successful brands in motorsports. In 1981 Audi was the first automaker to effectively introduce the four-wheel drive in the field of rally sports. Moreover, the Audi Quattro was equipped with a turbo engine which too was an innovation in this type of sport. Audi was thus able to dominate the rally scene until 1984. From 1988 onwards four-wheel drive cars have been a key to success in touring car racing. Since the year 2000 Audi is the driving force in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2006 Audi was the first automobile manufacturer to win the palm at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-engined car, the Audi R10 TDI.
